CTCI Brings Hour of Code to Rutland

December 4-10, 2017, is Computer Science Education Week. At over 144,000 registered events worldwide and happening in over 45 languages, tens of millions of students around the global are participating in The Hour of Code– which are one-hour tutorial events to excite and engage learners of all ages (4 to 104) about the importance of coding and computer science. The objective is to demystify what code is, and to illuminate coding as a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path. The goal of these events is to inspire continued learning and break stereotypes within STEM-fields, and to leave participants feeling empowered and nurtured to dream, create, and problem solve.
On December 2, CTCI hosted their own “Hour of Code Event” atThe Mint – Rutland’s Makerspace. This event gave kids of Rutland County the opportunity to be exposed to entry level coding of smartphone applications using carefully crafted lessons from the subscription service “BitsBox”. During his interactive presentation, Senior Partner Avery Chipka gave those who participated the rudimentary tools to begin creating playful animations from code.
CTCI offered two coding sessions, with the second being a bit more advanced than its predecessor. Both sessions entailed collaboration between kids, under the guidance of Avery Chipka and Michael Doenges, to discuss how to problem solve and come up with solutions, and use logic to author working code. Each session concluded with the opportunity for attendees to show off their newly acquired skills to their parents while applying their own creative touch by modifying and varying their code to tweak outcomes – be it adding music or sound effects, changing out one image for a different, or animating text. It was a privilege to connect with students in the community at the newly opened MINT, and CTCI looks forward to holding similar events for both children and adults in the future.
